Description

A few kilometers further east, six to be precise, beyond the promontory known as Troup Head which houses a Nature Reserve and a large colony of birds (there are also puffins in summer!) is Pennan. Like its neighboring Crovie, Pennan is also characterized by a row of cottages built under the cliff, by the sea, although here the space is not so small: in front of the cottages there is a narrow narrow road and beyond that road a long strip of grass and gravel with chairs, tables and threads stretched to spread the clothes. The origin of Pennan is the same of its neighboring Crovie and Gardenstown, small villages dedicated to fishing: the first port in Pennan was built in 1704 and rebuilt several times to modernize it or following storms, until today's structure dates back to 1981. But the most famous and most photographed thing in Pennan is another, a simple red phone booth! Why, are you wondering? Pennan became famous in 1983 for being the film location of the cult movie Local Hero which was shot partly here and partly in other parts of Scotland (Pennan in the movie was called Farness). The Pennan Inn, the only inn in the village, also appears in the movies and still exists today.
