The Costa Viola, so called because of the particular colours of the sea that takes on shades of purple, was described by the philosopher Plato as follows: Everything is tinged with the different shades of purple, giving life every evening, with its spectacular reflections, to an ever new vision. The purple color is due to a play of light and reflections of the mountains, which is reinforced by sulphurous particles emitted by the Stromboli volcano. The towns of Palmi, Bagnara Calabra, Scilla, Santa Trada and Villa San Giovanni are part of the Costa Viola.
