Description

The Civic Museum of Sulmona is divided into four sections, three located on the main floor of the building and one on the ground floor. One room on the ground floor houses the "domus of Ariadne", an archaeological museum area that displays the remains of a Roman dwelling dating from the first century BC to the first century AD. The archaeological section, located on the main floor of the palace, displays finds from the Italic and Roman period, coming from the excavations carried out in the Annunziata palace and in the Peligna valley, The medieval, Renaissance and modern section contains numerous works of sacred art and goldsmithery, medieval bas-reliefs, frescoes of the Abruzzo school, a precious cadastre dating back to 1376, coins minted by the Sulmonese Mint, wooden ecclesiastical furnishings and paintings from the treasure of the Pio Istituto dell'Annunziata. The Museum of Abruzzi and Molise Costumes and Transhumance, set up in the hall of the bell tower, houses 19th century folk costumes.
