Description

Chakpori Hill (Yao Wang Shan) is a sacred hill located at the right side of Potala Palace, with an altitude of 3725 m. In Tibetan language, Chakpori means “the horn of mountain”, which refers to the “horn” of the Red Mountain. Origin of the Name In the late 17th Century, for developing Tibetan Medicine, Sangjie Gyatso built medical school on Chakpori Hill. He selected some of Lama to learn Tibetan Medicine. In the medical school, there is a sapphire figure of Tibetan Medicine King. So, Han people also called it Yao Wang Shan, which means Medicine King Mountain. This medical school had existed until 1959.
