1. Beenkeragh, Ireland
The second-highest mountain in Ireland, Beenkeragh (rising 1,008.2 meters above ground level), is part of a horseshoe that makes for one of the country’s most extraordinary hikes.It is part of the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks range. It also offers some of Ireland’s “most intimidating” hill-walking, and is often climbed as part of the Coomloughra Horseshoe, described as “one of Ireland’s finest ridge-walks. 2. Surtsey Island, Iceland
Surtsey is a little island located in an archipelago off the southern coast of Iceland. It was formed as a result of a volcanic eruption that lasted for four years. Surtsey also has the reputation of being the newest island on the planet. Currently, it is open to a few scientists and geologists.
This forbidden island is off-limits for tourists as it is believed that human interference will disrupt the ecological succession taking place on the island.
3. North Brother Island, USA
Located in New York City, North Brother Island is one of the most popular abandoned places in the USA. Originally developed as a quarantine hospital, it was the home to the Typhoid Mary.
She was identified as the first American to carry the typhoid fever. Later, this place became a rehabilitation centre for drug addicts. Now, North Brother Island has a bird sanctuary and is permanently shut for the common people.
4. Pravcicka Brana, Czech Republic
One of the most spectacular landmarks of Czech Republic, Pravcicka Brana is the biggest sandstone arch in Europe. Till 1982, this landmark attracted tourists from far and near.
Later, to minimise erosion, people are restricted to visit the arch. However, geologists think that this natural sandstone arch of Pravcicka Brana would soon collapse and hence it makes it a forbidden place
5. Biblioteca delle Oblate, Florence
‘In the middle of Florence, Biblioteca delle Oblate is a quiet library that’s mostly filled with students. If you climb the many staircases to the roof terrace, there’s a peaceful little indoor-outdoor café which sells strong, delicious coffee. For the price of a Coffe (about €2 when I visited) you can sit with one of the least expensive, most impressive views of the Duomo anywhere in the city for as long as you like. Not a selfie stick in sight, either.
6. Lake Natron – The Scariest Lake
’Looking for some weird places in the world? How about this terrifying lake? Animals that die in this African lake are turned into statues, through calcification.
The presence of huge volumes of sodium bicarbonate ensures they turn into mummies. And because of the high alkaline collection, the lake looks red in color, especially during summer in Tanzania. This is the reason why this lake is also known as the ‘Petrifying Lake’. In spite of all these conditions, it is grazing ground for the Lesser Flamingos. Fancy a dip? Don’t even think about it!
7. Die Rakotzbrück – The Nature’s Own Ring
The Die Rakotzbrück bridge is another strange places and comes under the weird places in the world. Constructed in the 19th century is famed for its unique construction accuracy, with the bridge and its reflection merging into a complete and perfect stone circle, no matter where you see it from. This is probably why the bridge is also known as the ‘Devil’s Bridge’. It seems that the makers of the bridge emphasized more on its aesthetics than its utility. The lake is spotted with 365 separate pools arranged in a strange mosaic-like pattern. Each of these spots holds a unique and highly concentrated chemical content and is said to cure different diseases. Definitely one of the nicer strangest places in the world
9. DeadVlei – The Beautiful Yet Dead Forest
Deadvlei is a white clay pan located near the more famous salt pan of Sossusvlei, inside the Namib-Naukluft Park in Namibia.
The name Deadvlei means ‘dead marsh’ and the place is also known as ‘Dooie Vlei’. It is a sun-blackened dead forest in a white clay pan which is basically a dried oasis. An amazing yet counted as one of the strange places in the world, the lack of water forces the roots of trees to come outside looking for moisture. The struggle is real! The place is surrounded by rust-orange giant sand dunes that form a contrasting backdrop. This place is also said to be surrounded by the highest sand dunes in the world
