Historic Route 66

No list of best road trips in the United States can be completed without keeping Route 66 on top of the list. It is indeed one of the Highway System’s original routes covering a distance of approximately 2500 miles including eight states. It starts in downtown Chicago and ends its way across the country to the Santa Monica pier, Los Angeles, California. Do you know that Route 66 is also known as the Mother Road? If you are short of time, you can complete this trip in two to three days, but we recommend you not to rush and allocate at least five to six days for this route. Don’t miss out on the 400-million-year-old Meramec Caverns in Missouri and the Jesse James Wax Museum on your way.

Pacific Coast Highway

If you are planning to visit California, Oregon, and Washington in one go, then take a Pacific Coast Highway road trip. This route will take you to the stunning western coastline of the United States. It starts in San Diego and ends in San Francisco. If you want to deeply explore the surroundings you will need at least ten to fourteen days to cover this route. The best time to plan your trip here is between April to October. In California, this route is also known as Hwy 1. You will pass by dazzling sea cliffs, idiosyncratic beach towns, rocky tide pools, and some main towns on your way. Do check out the Ecola State Park and Olympic National Park. Witness the panoramic beauty of the Pacific Ocean on one side and alluring California on the other.

Blue Ridge Parkway

Another great road trip you should add to your bucket list is the Blue Ridge Parkway. Start your journey in Front Royal, Virginia, and end it in Cherokee, North Carolina. This route will take you through the southern Appalachian Mountains of Virginia and North Carolina. One of the best routes to witness the sublime sunset views, wildlife diversity, and vast wilderness. You will not find even a single stoplight to spoil your long drive on this path. Moreover, you can plan hiking, camping, sightseeing, and much more here. You will be amazed by the scenic views of nearby towns such as Floyd and Galax.  However, if you are short of time, this road trip will not take more than two days. But if you have time, we would recommend you to at least spend five to six days here.

Great River Road

This road trip is one of its kind as it will give you a detailed overview of life in the United States. Start your road trip in Itasca State Park, Minnesota, and end it in New Orleans, Louisiana. It will take you to New Orleans, Memphis, St Louis, and Minneapolis. The Great River Road allows you to closely observe the natural, cultural, historical, and recreational sites in the country. Moreover, it is not a single road, but rather a series of linked roads all following the Mississippi River. Driving from north to south will take six days. Don’t rush and keep things at a comfortable pace. This jaw-dropping drive intersects 10 states. The driveway route is well marked and you can navigate easily due to the green pilot’s wheel road signs.

Natchez Trace Parkway

The last road trip in the United States on our recommendation list for you is the Natchez Trace Parkway. It starts in Nashville, Tennessee, and will take you to Natchez, Mississippi. It is a historic route that was once in use for trading and hunting reasons. The Natchez Trace Parkway holds great history and the footsteps of fur traders, European settlers, enslavers, and confederate soldiers. Talking about the south, it is one of the richest road trips you will ever find here. You will pass by the jade swamps, adventurous hiking trails, magnificent mansions, riverside lounges, and much more on your way.  The best time of the year to plan your road trip here is between October to November. We recommend you spend at least four to five days soaking in the scenic beauty of the route. Add Meriwether Lewis Museum, Emerald Mount, and Chickasaw Village to your list of must-see places on this route.
