font-family:Arial,sans-serif; font-size:14px; font-style:normal; font-weight:normal; line-height:17px; text-decoration:none;\" target=\"_blank\">A post shared by Travel  Videos (@travelvideos_)<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.instagram.com\/en_US\/embeds.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>The <em>Westfjords<\/em> peninsula is a true <em>Icelandic<\/em> wilderness area and undoubtedly the ideal place for spotting birds and arctic foxes in their natural habitats.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/guidetoiceland.is\/travel-iceland\/drive\/westfjords\">The Westfjords of Iceland<\/a> is much less&nbsp;travelled than most other corners of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sworld.co.uk\/2\/324168\/photoalbum\/aurora-borealis-iceland-\u0a35\u0a3f\u0a71\u0a1a\">country,<\/a> due to their vastness and distance from \u2018must-see\u2019 destinations such as <a href=\"https:\/\/guidetoiceland.is\/search?q=jokulsarlon\">the J\u00f6kuls\u00e1rl\u00f3n glacier lagoon<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/guidetoiceland.is\/travel-iceland\/drive\/myvatn\">Lake M\u00fdvatn<\/a>, and the sites of <a href=\"https:\/\/guidetoiceland.is\/travel-iceland\/drive\/golden-circle\">the Golden Circle<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This fact, however, says nothing about the incredible wonders to be found hereIt is, in fact, one of the country\u2019s most spectacular and awe-inspiring regions.<\/p>\n<p>The settlements are small and sparse, and between them are untouched landscapes and dramatic features unlike any other in the country. While traversing the Westfjords does require a lot of driving, the surrounding scenery proves that the journey can be quite as amazing as the destination.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Many people are aware of the mi&nbsp;&nbsp;Iceland&#8217;s southwest, but have never heard of <a href=\"https:\/\/guidetoiceland.is\/travel-iceland\/drive\/dynjandi\">Dynjandi<\/a>&nbsp;on the Westfjords; the south coast black-sand-beach <a href=\"https:\/\/guidetoiceland.is\/travel-iceland\/drive\/reynisfjara\">Reynisfjara<\/a> is famous, but its pink-sand relative <a href=\"https:\/\/guidetoiceland.is\/travel-iceland\/drive\/raudisandur--sjounda\">Rau\u00f0asandur<\/a>&nbsp;on the Westfjords is virtually unknown.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">People rush for puffin-watching tours from , without realising that you can get within an arm\u2019s reach of these adorable little critters from the <a href=\"https:\/\/guidetoiceland.is\/travel-iceland\/drive\/latrabjarg\">L\u00e1trabjarg birdwatching cliffs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The amount of waterfalls in Iceland was one of the things that impressed me most about my trip. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.co.uk\/Attraction_Review-g4873055-d1908469-Reviews-Dynjandi_Fjallfoss-Hrafnseyri_Westfjords_Region.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dynjandi<\/a> was one of the most impressive waterfalls I\u2019ve ever seen, not just on this trip.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">One thing that should be noted, however, is that the Westfjords are really only accessible in the summer months, from May to October; snowfall is heavy in the region, and due to the small population, the roads are not as regularly maintained as in the rest of the country.<\/p>\n<p>The lack of flat land also limits the potential for agriculture, which makes fishing the primary industry and vital for the local economy.<\/p>\n<p>The weather in the Westfjords is very variable, ranging from sun, rain, wind, heat and cold all in the same day.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Westfjords peninsula is a true Icelandic wilderness area and undoubtedly the ideal place for spotting birds and arctic foxes in their natural habitats.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":2373,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[13,7],"tags":[],"class_list":{"0":"post-2369","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-europe","8":"category-travel"},"acf":[],"aioseo_notices":[],"amp_enabled":true,"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/sworld.co.uk\/travel-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2369","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/sworld.co.uk\/travel-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/sworld.co.uk\/travel-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sworld.co.uk\/travel-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sworld.co.uk\/travel-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=2369"}],"version-history":[{"count":7,"href":"https:\/\/sworld.co.uk\/travel-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2369\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":2377,"href":"https:\/\/sworld.co.uk\/travel-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2369\/revisions\/2377"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sworld.co.uk\/travel-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/2373"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/sworld.co.uk\/travel-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=2369"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sworld.co.uk\/travel-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=2369"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sworld.co.uk\/travel-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=2369"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
