L’architettura di molte baite di Macugnaga, fatte di tronchi di larice incastrati, racconta la storia dei Walser, portatori di una cultura e di una lingua (il Titsch) uniche e purtroppo a rischio di estinzione. Nel villaggio i Walser vivevano come una comunità e in ogni abitazione si trovava la stalla, una cucina con la canna fumaria, le stanze da letto, il granaio e lo spicher, cioè lo stanzino per la conservazione dei viveri.
Le Baite sono realizzate con basamenti in pietra, strutture e interni interamente in legno di larice, i caratteristici balconi ed il tetto in pietra a due falde ricoperto di lastre di beola, dette anche "piode", o più raramente di scandole di larice. Come riscaldamento una stufa in pietra ollare, detta "ofe", in genere riportante la data di costruzione dell'abitazione, le più antiche delle quali del XVI secolo. Uno splendido esempio di questa architettura è il Museo "Alts Walserhuus van zer Burfuggu" che si trova nella frazione Borca.
Da non perdere la Chiesa Vecchia, risalente al XII secolo, con l’annesso cimitero dedicato agli alpinisti.
Alcuni viaggiatori consigliano poi un'attività: leggere all’ombra dell’antico tiglio plurisecolare -dalla circonferenza di 7 metri!-, che la leggenda racconta essere stato portato da una donna all’epoca della fondazione della comunità di Macugnaga.
