La chiesa di S. Giorgio costituisce l'esempio più importante e ben riuscito di barocco a Salerno. Su quella originaria del X secolo, ne viene costruita una nuova che, nel corso del XVI secolo, è oggetto di modifiche: di questa fase rimane un portale in marmo datato 1560 e collocato, nel XIX secolo, sulla facciata della chiesa attuale. Quest'ultima viene realizzata tra il 1674 ed il 1675. E' ad unica navata, coperta da volte a botte con unghie di rinforzo, cappelle laterali, transetto rettangolare sormontato da una cupola ed uno spazio quadrato retrostante l'altare. L'interno presenta numerosi affreschi: "Vergine con Bambino tra Santi", di Andrea Sabatini del 1523 (seconda cappella a destra). I più importanti sono quelli della volta e del presbiterio di Angelo Solimena: nel transetto a destra "La Crocifissione" e a sinistra "San Benedetto"; nella navata sinistra, "Il Martirio delle Sante Tecla, Archelaa e Susanna" del 1680; il "San Michele" ed altri dipinti (lungo le pareti) del giovanissimo figlio di Solimena, Francesco. Vi lavorano anche Giacinto de Populi con "La Sacra Famiglia" e Michele Ricciardi con l'affresco in sagrestia raffigurante la "Vergine che da la pianeta a Sant'Idelfonso".
Negli anni 1694-1695, l'artigiano vietrese Nicola d'Acunto lavora ad indorare gli stucchi della chiesa. L'altare maggiore è attribuito ai maestri carraresi Pietro e Bartolomeo Ghetti.
