Sono state costruite con massi megalitici lunghi anche quasi due metri, e le tre porte d'ingresso alla città, perfettamente orientate ai tre tramonti più significativi dell'anno: il tramonto del solstizio estivo (Porta Spada, azimut 301); quello del solstizio invernale (Porta Trapani, azimuth 240); ed il tramonto all'equinozio primaverile ed autunnale (Porta Carmine, azimuth 270).
Ai grandi blocchi, più antichi, che caratterizzano la parte inferiore, venne poi aggiunto, in epoche successive, un innalzamento a conci più piccoli. Le mura erano dotate di torri di avvistamento, di un camminamento cui si accedeva attraverso ripide scalette e di piccole aperture che permettevano il passaggio degli abitanti e forse dei rifornimenti. Il tratto meglio conservato si sviluppa lungo via dell' Addolorata, da Porta Carmine a Porta Spada.
