Les "sept sœurs" sont les sept immeubles de grande hauteur : la maison sur Kotelnicheskaya Naberezhnaya, l'hôtel "Ukraina", le ministère des affaires étrangères, la maison sur la place Kudrinskaya, le bâtiment administratif et résidentiel sur la place de la Porte Rouge, l'hôtel "Leningrad", et le bâtiment principal de la MSU sur les collines Sparrow.
Tous ces bâtiments représentent l'apogée de l'empire soviétique d'après-guerre en matière d'architecture urbaine.
Les bâtiments ont été construits à Moscou dans les années 1940-1950 comme le symbole de la puissance du peuple soviétique, qui a gagné la Grande Guerre patriotique, comme la personnification de la "ville du futur", que la capitale était censée devenir.
