Zu den ältesten intakten Holzbauten der Welt gehören die Stavkirke, von denen die meisten in Norwegen zu finden sind. Im Mittelalter gab es zwischen 1.000 und 2.000 von ihnen, die über das ganze Land verstreut waren. Heute haben nur noch 28 von ihnen überlebt. Die älteste ist wahrscheinlich die Stavkirke in Urnes in der Sognefjord-Region, die Experten zufolge die vierte Kirche ist, die 1140 genau an dieser Stelle erbaut wurde.
Die im romanischen Stil erbaute Kirche besticht nicht nur durch ihr Alter, sondern auch durch ihre prächtigen Skulpturen und ihre hervorragende Erhaltung. Die Pfosten (stav), die das Bauwerk tragen, sind fein geschnitzt, und die Verzierungen zeigen Motive wie Kruzifixe, mythologische Kreaturen und phytomorphe Ornamente.
Die Kirche ist seit 1881 im Besitz der norwegischen Treuhandgesellschaft und wurde 1980 in die Liste des UNESCO-Weltkulturerbes aufgenommen.
