L'original de Whistler, Harmonie en bleu et or : The Peacock Room (1876), était la salle à manger de la maison londonienne du magnat de la navigation Frederick Leyland. Elle avait été conçue pour mettre en valeur la collection de céramiques asiatiques de Leyland, et le tableau de Whistler, La Princesse du pays de la porcelaine (1863-64), figurait au-dessus de la cheminée. Alors que Leyland et son architecte étaient absents, Whistler a pris des libertés audacieuses, pour ne pas dire flagrantes, en peignant toute la pièce dans un élan d'enthousiasme et en exécutant ses désormais célèbres paons sur les coûteux panneaux muraux en cuir italien. Le collectionneur a poursuivi l'artiste pour l'importante somme d'argent que Whistler avait portée au compte de Leyland, et Whistler, en réponse, a peint une caricature peu flatteuse de son mécène intitulée The Gold Scab : Eruption in Frilthy Lucre (Le créancier). Confondant les mots "froufrou" et "crasseux", Whistler s'en prend à la "prétention" de Leyland ainsi qu'à son avarice. Après avoir acquis la pièce maîtresse de la pièce, le tableau de Whistler représentant La princesse du pays de la porcelaine, l'industriel américain Charles Lang Freer a acheté la pièce entière en 1904 aux héritiers de Leyland. Freer a ensuite fait installer le contenu de la Peacock Room dans son manoir de Détroit. Après la mort de Freer en 1919, la Peacock Room a été installée de façon permanente dans la Freer Gallery of Art de la Smithsonian à Washington, D.C., où elle a été entièrement restaurée en 2011.
