The Cars archaeological site is one of the most remarkable ancient sites in Limousin. Situated near Saint-Merd-les-Oussines, these ruins date from the 2C and 3C. The Gallo-Roman site comprises a funerary complex and a dwelling some 300m apart.
Between the heaths and the forest on the Plateau de Millevaches, granite blocks whisper of a history that dates back almost 2,000 years.
Set out on the traces of the Gallo-Romans who came to live in Haute-Corrèze in the 2nd century AD ... Who were they? What was their life here like? The bimillennial stones here hold clues to their existence. Here is the plan of a villa, criss-crossed by a watercourse; there, mausoleums emerge from the chaos ... Your imagination runs wild, awakening your archaeological spirit. To guide you in this trip through time, cultural guides are available on-site near the sunny little terrace.
This site was discovered by Marius Vazeilles in the early 20th century. The archaeological artefacts taken from the site are on display at the Musée d'Archéologie et du Patrimoine Marius Vazeilles in Meymac.
