La struttura è stata riportata all'architettura originaria, mettendo in luce le trabeazioni e i pilastri rinascimentali nascosti dagli stucchi ottocenteschi. San Severo fu edificata nel 1575 sull'antica chiesa con ospedale di Santa Maria a Selice, modificata e ristrutturata tra il 1599 ed il 1620 su disegno di Gian Giacomo Conforto.
L'interno presenta i caratteri architettonici tipici del Cinquecento, in cui si inseriscono gli altari settecenteschi in marmo policromo. Degno di nota è il monumento sepolcrale di Giovanni Alfonso Bisvallo, scolpito da Gerolamo D'Auria nel 1617, smembrato dal terremoto del 1688 e ricomposto nel restauro settecentesco nell'altare del transetto destro.
La fruibilità della chiesa di proprietà comunale viene assicurata dal Servizio Patrimonio Artistico e Museale della IX Direzione Centrale Politiche Culturali del Comune di Napoli con personale comunale e lavoratori socialmente utili.
La pregevole navata della struttura ospita concerti, esposizioni temporanee e manifestazioni culturali consoni alla monumentalità del luogo.
