L'Abadia de hovedø va ser Una Abadia Cistercenca Fundada el 18 De Maig de 1147 per monjos De L'Abadia Anglicana De L'illa Hovedø, dedicada a La Mare de Déu I A Sant Edmund. Una església dedicada A Edmund ja es trobava a L'illa, i els monjos la van prendre com a església de l'abadia, modificant-la per complir els requisits Cistercencs.
L'abat Philipp va arribar a L'illa el Maig de 1147, juntament amb 12 monjos i alguns germans laics.
La resta del monestir segueix un pla D'edificació Cistercenc modificat, per tenir en compte un petit turó local. L'església mateixa està construïda En Estil Romànic; la resta del monestir era presumiblement Gòtic. Durant el període medieval, L'abadia va ser una de les institucions Més riques De Noruega, amb més de 400 propietats, incloent una pesca i jardins de fusta.
L'agitació política durant la successió Al tron De Dinamarca-Noruega va portar al final del monestir.
