Construit (vers 70 avant J.-C.) par les duumvirs Q. Valgus et M. Porcius, c'est l'un des amphithéâtres les plus anciens et les mieux conservés qui existent, et il pouvait accueillir plus de 20 000 spectateurs. L'auditorium est divisé en trois secteurs : l'ima cavea (premier rang) pour les citoyens importants, et les media et summa, plus haut, pour tous les autres. Un velarium, ou auvent, était souvent étendu sur les tribunes pour protéger les spectateurs du soleil. Le bâtiment était utilisé pour les combats de gladiateurs. Deux portes s'ouvraient sur l'axe principal de l'arène : les participants aux jeux défilaient par une porte, tandis que les morts ou les blessés étaient emportés par l'autre. En 59 après J.-C., une violente émeute a éclaté entre les "fans" de Pompéi et de Nocera, et le champ a été "disqualifié" pour 10 ans (une disposition annulée après le tremblement de terre de 62 après J.-C.) : l'éruption peut avoir caché un certain ressentiment de Pompéi envers Nocera, puisque la première était récemment devenue une colonie et avait absorbé une partie de son territoire.
