L'église et le monastère ont été fondés au 8e siècle par des religieuses qui avaient fui Constantinople à la suite des persécutions iconoclastes. Le bâtiment abritait à l'origine St Andrew in Nile. Le nom original, qui faisait écho à celui de la congrégation abandonnée, était Santa Maria a Percejo. "Donnaromita" est une déformation populaire de "Romite in Costantinopoli". \Ce sont donc des religieuses de Constantinople et de Roumanie qui ont fondé un monastère à côté de l'église de Sant'Andrea a Nilo, qui s'appelait Santa Maria de Percejo ou Petrejo ou encore Santa Maria di Costantinopoli ou Cella Nova. Les Napolitains l'appelaient le Monastère des Femmes de la Roumanie ou des Romites de Constantinople et, par contraction, de Donnaromita. Selon l'historien Bartolomeo Capasso, cependant, le nom dérive du nom de la famille qui a fondé le monastère avant 1025, appelée Domina Aromata. L'église a été entièrement reconstruite en 1535 sur les plans de l'architecte Giovan Francesco di Palma. L'intérieur comporte une seule nef avec dix chapelles. Le plafond en bois a été réalisé entre 1587 et 1590 par Nunzio Ferraro et Giovan Battista Vigliante sur un dessin d'Andrea Magliulo. Les panneaux centraux du plafond sont l'œuvre de Teodoro d'Errico, tandis que les huit peintures latérales sont de Girolamo Imparato. Dans la coupole se trouve une fresque, commencée par Luca Giordano et réalisée en 1696 par Giuseppe Simonelli, qui a également peint les fresques des voûtes et des voiles. \n
