Le mausolée, un petit temple de style néoclassique, fut achevé en 1831, orné de statues et de reliefs. De part et d'autre du portail d'entrée se trouvent deux statues de Luigi Argenti représentant la Science et la Religion, et sur l'architrave les mots "A Alessandro Volta - La veuve et les fils".
Sur le mur du fond se trouve le sarcophage en marbre du sculpteur Bayer, surmonté d'un buste sculpté par l'artiste Giovan Battista Comolli. Le buste est flanqué de deux génies ailés, dont l'un couronne Volta. Dans le panneau ci-dessus, un relief représente l'épisode le plus célèbre de la vie de Volta : la présentation de la batterie à Napoléon Bonaparte à Paris en 1801.
