Izvorno borbe bikova održane su na Plaza de San Francisco, istorijskom trgu u blizini gradske vijećnice Seville.
Prva drvena, privremena arena izgrađena je 1730.godine u blizini trenutne lokacije Plaza de Toros. Arena je imala pravougaoni oblik koji je bio prednost za bikove, koji su se mogli povući u uglu. Smatralo se nesigurnim za bikoborce, a 1933.struktura je zamijenjena kružnom arenom, također u drvetu.
1761. godine odlučeno je podići stalno mjesto na mjestu buvljaka.
Veličanstveni Bik koji danas vidimo dizajnirao je Vicente San Martín, koji je stvorio elegantnu strukturu u tipičnom regionalnom stilu. Trebalo bi više od jednog veka pre nego što je arena konačno završena u 1881-u. Danas može ugostiti oko 12.500 gledalaca.
U podnožju bullringa nalazi se statua Francisca Romero Lópeza, poznatijeg kao Curro Romero, poznatog torera iz Sevilje koji je bio aktivan od 1950-ih do kasnih 1990-ih.
