Die Hauptkirche des Komplexes - Surb Sion - wurde 1215 vom Fürsten Vace Vaciutyan an der Stelle errichtet, an der sich in den ersten Jahrhunderten des Christentums eine Einsiedelei befand.
Die Kirche gehört, ähnlich wie Hovhannavank, zum Typ der kreuzförmigen Kuppelkirchen.
Zum Klosterkomplex gehören ein kluges Gavit (Narthex) (1250) und ein Buchdepot (1255), das an die kleine Kirche von Astvatsatsin (1235) angebaut ist.
Das enorme Volumen im Inneren des Klosters lässt vermuten, dass die Kirche nicht nur zur Aufbewahrung von Manuskripten, sondern auch zum Umschreiben von Büchern genutzt wurde.
Auf dem oberen Teil der Altarapside befindet sich ein Relief der aufgehenden Sonne mit Strahlen, darüber ein Flachrelief eines fliegenden Lamms und das Wappen von Vaciutyan: ein Adler mit einem Lamm in seinen Krallen.
Sowohl in der Klosteranlage als auch im Inneren des Komplexes sind Gräber erhalten, einige im Stil der verzierten Khatckar. Vom gegenüberliegenden Ufer des Kassakh-Flusses bietet sich ein ausdrucksstarker Blick auf das Kloster.
