En 2000, le sculpteur danois Bjørn Nørgaard a créé "The Genetically Modified Paradise", une série surréaliste d'êtres étrangement difformes, dont "The Genetically Modified Little Mermaid", une nouvelle interprétation de la célèbre statue de Copenhague "The Little Mermaid". Chacun des personnages de Nørgaard a été réalisé en fonte, en acier inoxydable, en aluminium-bronze, en feuille d'or, en plomb doré, en granit, en bronze et en grès pour l'Exposition universelle de 2000 à Hanovre, en Allemagne. Le thème de cette année-là était "L'homme, la nature et la technologie", et ces sculptures y correspondaient parfaitement.
Cette sirène est également en bronze et se tient dans une position similaire à celle d'Eriksen, mais sa silhouette tordue, avec des jambes squelettiques allongées et une tête méconnaissable, est une critique des altérations génétiques. Une fois l'exposition terminée, les sculptures ont été déplacées en 2006 sur la place Dahlerups à Copenhague, où elles vivent sur l'eau, à quelques pas de la statue originale de Langelinie.
