Die Fontana Maggiore wurde zwischen 1278 und 1280 von Nicola und Giovanni Pisano zur Feier der Fertigstellung des neuen Aquädukts errichtet. Der Entwurf stammt von Fra Bevignate, während der hydraulische Teil von Boninsegna da Venezia ausgeführt wurde.
Der Brunnen wird seit mehr als 700 Jahren vom Monte Pacciano mit Wasser versorgt.
Sie besteht aus zwei konzentrischen, übereinander liegenden Becken, die mit 50 Flachreliefs und 24 Statuen verziert sind. Das untere Becken zeigt Flachreliefs mit Szenen aus der landwirtschaftlichen Tradition, den Monaten des Jahres mit den Tierkreiszeichen, den freien Künsten, der Bibel und der Geschichte Roms. Das obere Becken besteht aus vierundzwanzig Platten, die durch Statuen mit allegorischen, heiligen und historischen Figuren voneinander getrennt sind.
Die Becken werden von einem Bronzebecher überragt, der von einer Gruppe dreier Nymphen gekrönt wird, die die drei theologischen Tugenden (Glaube, Hoffnung, Nächstenliebe) darstellen.
