En el año 2000, el escultor danés Bjørn Nørgaard creó "El paraíso modificado genéticamente", una serie surrealista de seres extrañamente deformes, entre ellos "La sirenita modificada genéticamente", una nueva interpretación de la famosa estatua de Copenhague "La sirenita". Cada uno de los personajes de Nørgaard se hizo con hierro fundido, acero inoxidable, bronce-aluminio, pan de oro, plomo dorado, granito, bronce y arenisca para la Exposición Universal de 2000 en Hannover (Alemania). El tema de ese año era "El hombre, la naturaleza y la tecnología", y estas esculturas encajaban perfectamente.
Esta sirena también es de bronce y se sienta en una posición similar a la de Eriksen, pero su figura retorcida, con piernas esqueléticas alargadas y una cabeza irreconocible, es una crítica a las alteraciones genéticas. Una vez finalizada la exposición, las esculturas se trasladaron en 2006 a la plaza Dahlerups de Copenhague, donde viven sobre el agua, a un paso de la estatua original en Langelinie.
