Fontana Maggiore blev bygget mellem 1278 og 1280 af Nicola og Giovanni Pisano for at fejre færdiggørelsen af den nye Akvædukt. Projektet skyldes FRA Bevignate, mens den hydrauliske del blev udført af Boninsegna fra Venedig.
Fontænen har modtaget vand fra monte Pacciano i mere end 700 år.
Den består af to overlappende koncentriske bassiner, dekoreret med 50 basrelieffer og 24 statuer. Det nedre bassin har en basrelief: scener fra den agrariske tradition, årets måneder med stjernetegnene, den liberale kunst, Bibelen og Roms historie. Det øverste bassin består af fireogtyve plader adskilt af statuer, der repræsenterer allegoriske, hellige og historiske figurer.
Bassinerne overvindes af en Bronskop kronet af en gruppe på tre nymfer, der repræsenterer de tre teologiske dyder (tro, håb, velgørenhed).
