I 2000 skabte den danske billedhugger BJ Kurrrn N Kurrgaard "det genmodificerede Paradis", en surrealistisk serie af mærkeligt misdannede væsener, herunder" den genmodificerede Lille Havfrue", en ny fortolkning af Københavns berømte statue"Den Lille Havfrue". Hver af de to figurer var lavet af støbejern, rustfrit stål, aluminiumbrons, guldblad, forgyldt bly, granit, bronsog sandsten til Verdensudstillingen 2000 i Hannover, Tyskland. Temaet for det år var" mand, natur, teknologi", som disse skulpturer bestemt passer til regningen.
