L'église gothique balte de Suurhusen rappelle les anciennes églises fortifiées. À l'origine, il mesurait 32 mètres de long et 9,35 mètres de large. En 1450, l'église a été raccourcie d'environ un quart et la tour a été construite dans l'espace ainsi créé.
La Schiefer Kirchturm von Suurhusen (Tour penchée de Suurhusen) mesure 27,37 mètres de haut avec une projection de 2,47 mètres. Elle s'incline à un angle de 5,19 degrés, alors que l'inclinaison de la tour penchée de Pise n'est que de 3,97 degrés.
Cette inclinaison fait de la Schiefer Kirchturm von Suurhusen (tour penchée de Suurhusen) la tour la plus inclinée du monde.
Ce record est également reconnu dans le Guinness World Records.
Selon l'historien local Tjabbo van Lessen, l'église a été construite au Moyen Âge dans une zone marécageuse sur des fondations en rondins de chêne qui étaient isolées des eaux souterraines. Lorsque le terrain a été drainé au XIXe siècle, le bois a pourri, ce qui a fait pencher la tour. La tour a été fermée au public en 1975 pour des raisons de sécurité, et rouverte 10 ans plus tard après avoir été stabilisée.
