Der Glockenturm überragt die friaulische Ebene aufgrund seiner ungewöhnlichen Höhe (für eine so kleine Stadt): Er ist der erste in Italien und der 32. auf dem europäischen Kontinent.
Seine Struktur zeichnet sich durch eine Reihe heller Zellen aus, die das braune Innere hervorheben: Oben befinden sich quadratische Uhren mit römischen Ziffern.
Der Erzpriester der Kathedrale, Valentino Buiatti, war der Hauptförderer des Baus des höchsten Glockenturms der Halbinsel in Mortegliano. Im Jahr 1955 begannen die Arbeiten unter der Leitung des Architekten Pietro Zanini (1895-1990) aus Udine nach einem Projekt, das eine persönliche und moderne Interpretation des neugotischen Stils darstellt.
Die Einweihung fand am 20. September 1959 unter großer öffentlicher Beteiligung statt.
Der achteckige Glockenturm ist aus Stahlbeton und Ziegeln gebaut: Im Sockel befindet sich eine Kapelle und eine Loggia dient als Glockenturm.
Zanini setzte eine lobenswerte Proportionalität der dekorativen Elemente ein, um das Gesamtbild bis zur kühnen, 22 Meter hohen Turmspitze, die vom Kreuz überragt wird, künstlerisch attraktiv zu gestalten.
In den folgenden Jahren musste der Turm leider einen langsamen Verfall und einen Mangel an finanziellen Mitteln für die Instandhaltung hinnehmen: 1990 wurde jedoch eine grundlegende Restaurierung durchgeführt.
