L'œuvre, un cadeau de la "Famiglia Artistica" à la ville de Milan, est située dans le terrain de jeu des petits jardins des îlots de circulation, qui sont maintenant devenus les arrière-boutiques de nombreux magasins préfabriqués. La statue en bronze a été réalisée en 1955 et inaugurée le 19 mai 1956.
L'œuvre représente Pinocchio, devenu un enfant, regardant le corps inanimé de la marionnette qu'il était. De chaque côté de la base se trouvaient le Chat et le Renard. Au centre, sur le pilier qui soutient Pinocchio, est inscrite une phrase du poète Antonio Negri :
"Comme j'étais drôle quand j'étais une marionnette ! Et vous qui me regardez, êtes-vous sûrs d'avoir dompté la marionnette qui vit en vous ? "
La statue est visiblement endommagée par le vandalisme : tout ce qui reste du chat volé sont les empreintes de pattes et le nez de Pinocchio a été brisé. La fontaine est également inactive depuis un certain temps.
