Inaugurée en 1778, sous le règne de Ferdinand IV de Bourbon, elle a été construite par Domenico Amedeo Orsini, cardinal et duc de Gravina, pour donner à la ville un plus grand approvisionnement en eau, en utilisant l'eau de la source Pozzo Pateo.
Il s'est effondré en 1858 à cause de l'affaissement de l'étage inférieur et a été reconstruit dans sa structure actuelle. Une épigraphe, également datée de 1858, rappelle l'événement en donnant le nom de l'architecte Gaetano De Tommaso et du maire de l'époque Giuseppe Palmieri.
La fontaine a été réactivée en 1927 sous le gouvernement fasciste, en utilisant les eaux de la rivière Sele. La fontaine fonctionne toujours et se trouve sur la Piazza Notar Domenico, dans le cœur monumental du centre historique.
