Piazza Unità d'Italia, il salotto di Trieste, è la piazza più estesa d'Europa che si affaccia sul mare.
Inizialmente si chiamava piazza San Pietro, poi piazza Grande. Il nome piazza Unità lo assunse quando Trieste fu annessa al Regno d'Italia dopo il 1918. Nel 1955, quando Trieste tornò nuovamente all'Italia con lo scioglimento del territorio libero di Trieste, la piazza prese il nome attuale.
La Piazza è bella durante il giorno e diventa meravigliosa la sera, con i palazzi illuminati e i fari blu sul pavimento che indicano dove era posizionato il vecchio mandracchio (porto). Dal Molo Audace la vista diventa superlativa. L’impressione è di essere in mezzo al mare e con un solo colpo d’occhio si abbracciano tutte le rive con monumentali palazzi dal Palazzo Carciotti, la chiesa greco-ortodossa di San Nicolò, Teatro Verdi, Piazza Unità d’Italia, l’Hotel Excelsior Palace,Palazzo del Governo ed il Palazzo del Comune.
