Piazza Vecchia è il cuore più antico della città, è “una delle piazze più affascinanti al mondo“, come scriveva Le Corbusier dopo averla vista una sera al tramonto. Nata dopo la demolizione di case e botteghe medievali, è uno spazio rinascimentale con al centro la fontana donata nel 1780 dal podestà Contarini. Racchiusa ai lati da edifici storici come il Palazzo del Podestà, il Palazzo della Ragione, che risale al secolo XII ma fu ricostruito nel Quattro-Cinquecento con il leone di San Marco, a testimonianza della dominazione della Serenissima. Su tutti spicca poi l’imponente Torre medievale del Comune che ancora oggi, alle 10 di sera, fa sentire i suoi 100 rintocchi, in ricordo di quando venivano chiuse le porte della città. In Piazza Vecchia la terza domenica di ogni mese (escluso agosto) si svolge il Mercantico : Mercatino dell'antiquariato.
