Su un basamento di quattro gradoni concentrici sorge la colonna di marmo bianco sormontata da una sfera; alla base un leone di pietra accovacciato reca sul petto un collare con incisa la scritta Custos Iusticiae, custode della giustizia. Il leone è di epoca romana (I sec. a.C. - I sec. d.C.), ma l'origine del gruppo è incerta: forse, voluto dal viceré spagnolo Pietro di Toledo, risale alla metà del Cinquecento, oppure, ricordo dei Veneziani liberatori dai Saraceni, risale al 1000 circa
