Die Festung oder Rocca della Verruca auf dem gleichnamigen Gipfel (537 m) der Monti Pisani beherrscht die gesamte Pisaner Ebene und den Lauf des Arno. Quellen bezeugen seine Existenz vor dem Jahr 1000. Sein Name rührt daher, dass er sich auf dem gleichnamigen Berg befindet, dessen Form einer Warze ähnelt. Obwohl es in schlechtem Zustand ist, hat es neben seinem fünfeckigen Grundriss auch einen gewissen Charme bewahrt. Im Inneren befand sich eine Inschrift mit der ersten Spur des italienischen Rudersports, die "Dodici Giugno MCIII" (Zwölf Juni MCIII) lautet und heute im Museo Nazionale di San Matteo in Pisa aufbewahrt wird.
Die Rocca della Verruca war ein wichtiger Punkt im Verteidigungssystem der Pisaner Republik, so dass sie "das Auge der Pisaner" genannt wurde, weil man von hier oben einen großen Teil des Territoriums kontrollieren konnte. Wurde ein Dorf angegriffen, signalisierte es sein Hilfeersuchen durch das Schwenken von Fahnen, das Entzünden von Feuern und das Läuten von Glocken. Diese Signale wurden so lange reproduziert, bis sie von der Verruca gesehen wurden, die sie reproduzierte und Pisa alarmierte.
