Vrata Elvira, koja se nalaze u podnožju brda, od kojih je danas ostao samo luk, bila su tradicionalni ulaz u grad Granadu i danas je savršeno polazište za upoznavanje susjedstva.
Zbog svog strateškog položaja, Puerta de Elvira je vremenom postala prava tvrđava-kapija.
Njegova izgradnja predstavlja dvije istorijske faze: Zirí period u 11. stoljeću i Nasridski period pod vlašću Jusufa I (1333-1354).
Takođe u Nasridskom periodu podignut je spoljni monumentalni luk, koji podseća na velika vrata sačuvana sredinom četrnaestog veka, kao što su Puerta Rambla (Bab al-Ramla) i Puerta de la Justicia u Alhambri (Bab al- Saria).
Godine 1612. porušene su tri stražarske kuće, proširen prostor ispred vrata i podignuto dvanaest kuća uz zid, koje su do danas ostale praktično nepromijenjene.
Za vreme francuske okupacije, delovi zida i nekoliko gvožđenih vrata su uništeni, uključujući 1979. gvozdena kapija (bab al-Hadid) poznata i kao Puerta de la Cuesta (bab al-Aqaba), dodata u 14. veku komuniciraju medinu sa Albaicínom.
U podnožju ovog prekrasnog spomenika nalazi se sadašnja Piazza di San Gil, koja je u muslimansko doba bila Trg Hatabina ili Leñadores i koji je bio jedan od najprometnijih trgova jer je bio živčani centar komunikacija između grada, sela i Medine koje su bile na suprotnoj strani rijeke Darro.
