Il vino terrano fu per la prima volta menzionato alla fine del XIV secolo, quando veniva servito in bottiglie di ceramica agli ambasciatori imperiali. Fino a circa un centinaio d'anni fa era la varietà di vino più estesa in Istria.
Si tratta di un vino dal carattere forte e fermo; è il vino dei contadini istriani con un gusto aspramente deciso, gradito anche ai nobili, mentre le famiglie locali lo offrivano all’ospite.
Già sulla vite il terrano è distinto da un carattere ricco e robusto. Cresce in grandi grappoli, la polpa è consistente e i chicchi fitti con una buccia resistente. Il terrano è un’ottima idea per coloro che sono alla ricerca dell’autentico e dell’inesplorato, per gli appassionati e desiderosi di nuove scoperte.
Dicono che abbia il colore del sangue di lepre; se fate ruotare il vino nel bicchiere noterete dei toni violacei, mentre nell'aroma prevale l’odore del lampone.

Un bicchiere di terrano si sposa ottimamente con piatti a base di carne e con la selvaggina, in particolare se sono speziati. Viene consigliato con il prosciutto e il formaggio, il tipico antipasto istriano, ancora più saporito se servito con pane casereccio.
