L ’escursione inizia in corrispondenza di una curva sulla S. S. 83 Marsicana, al Valico di Barrea: da una sterrata originano i Sentieri K2, K3 e K4: ci si tiene sul percorso centrale ad imboccare il K3. Si tratta inizialmente di una comoda sterrata che, ad una radura incrocia il Sentiero L2: da qui si inizia a costeggiare il Rio Torto, proseguendo sulla destra e lasciandosi sulla sinistra l’L2 con il suo ponticello di legno che varca il ruscello. Da qui in poi il K3 diviene un tipico sentiero di foresta con fondo spesso “imbottito” di foglie secche; il ruscello è sempre presente sulla sinistra del tracciato, con spettacolari cascatelle. Dopo poco, per ammirare le cascate e dirigersi alla Grotta, occorre percorrere una “variante” del K3, che inizialmente costeggia quest’ultimo, e successivamente si inerpica con decisione sul fianco del Serrone, un plateau che sfiora quota 1800, e che alla sua base è molto ripido e roccioso. Da questo momento, in effetti, il sentiero, finora in lieve pendenza, sale con pendenza marcata, talvolta con serie di tornantini. Il ruscello presenta varie altre cascatelle, fino a quella principale, su cui si allunga il sentiero con una lieve deviazione. Un salto spettacolare, di varie decine di metri, una vera e propria meraviglia immersa nel bosco.
Il cammino prosegue e si inerpica, fino ad arrivare sotto un grande sperone roccioso, anche questo molto bello; con una svolta e una lieve discesa raggiunge la Grotta dello Schievo.
