La Piazzetta, che si affaccia sul bacino di San Marco, offre una magnifica vista della laguna.
Le due famose colonne, provenienti da Costantinopoli, sono collocate all'ingresso della piazza in onore rispettivamente del primo patrono di Venezia, San Teodoro, e del Santo patrono Marco, diventato tale dopo il leggendario trafugamento del corpo.
Si narra che originariamente le colonne fossero tre e che una, durante il trasbordo, s’inabissò senza poter esser più recuperata. Sembra che essa sia ancora lì, in attesa di essere riportata nuovamente alla luce.
Avvolta nel mistero è inoltre la tecnica che Nicolò Barattieri, costruttore anche del primo Ponte di Rialto, adottò per issare le colonne.
