La Salina di Cervia è la stazione più a sud del Parco Regionale del Delta del Po ed è considerata un ambiente di elevatissimo interesse naturalistico e paesaggistico, tanto da essere stata inserita come Zona Umida di Importanza Internazionale nella convenzione di Ramsar. Dal 1979 è divenuta Riserva Naturale dello Stato di popolamento animale.
l'ambiente delle saline è di straordinaria bellezza e suggestione: popolato da specie rare come i Fenicotteri, i Cavalieri d'Italia, le Avocette e altre specie protette è un punto di riferimento per i visitatori sensibili agli aspetti ambientali.
La salvaguardia naturalistica della Salina di Cervia è affidata al Corpo Forestale incaricato della vigilanza che, a norma dei vincoli previsti dal decreto istitutivo della Riserva Naturale, vieta il libero accesso all'area protetta.
Le visite sono quindi consentite solo se accompagnati dalle Guardie Forestali o avviene presso il Centro Visite Salina di Cervia, punto informativo del Parco del Delta del Po.
