l Castello di Alviano nasce in pieno medioevo come fortezza militare, precisamente intorno al 995 ad opera del conte Offredo sceso dalla Germania. Nel 1490 il valoroso condottiero, architetto Bartolomeo d'Alviano darà inizio alla sua ricostruzione rendendo l'intera struttura funzionale alle nuove esigenze di vita di quei secoli. Infatti è un tipico esempio di castello rinascimentale che conserva intatte ancora oggi le caratteristiche di baluardo difensivo e di palazzo residenziale.
Il castello ha una sua posizione strategica in quanto sovrasta la valle del Tevere, ed è proprio questo che lo ha reso spettatore di numerose battaglie locali, soprattutto tra guelfi e ghibellini. Dalla metà del 1600 alla fine del 1800 il castello venne acquistato all'asta dalla famiglia Pamphili divenendone residenza. Oggi è sede del Comune al piano superiore e di un importante centro convegni al pianterreno.
Il seminterrato attualmente ospita il Museo della civiltà contadina "La terra e lo strumento", dove sono esposti i più significativi strumenti ed utensili utilizzati dalle famiglie alvianesi tra la fine del 1800 e il dopoguerra.
Sempre nei seminterrati si trova il Museo multimediale di Bartolomeo d'Alviano e i Capitani di Ventura umbri: è stato inaugurato il 1 luglio del 2000
