Avamposto militare durante il tardo Impero romano, eretto allo scopo di controllare il passaggio lungo il fiume Olona di uomini e merci, venne in seguito utilizzato come bastione difensivo dai Goti, che edificarono un torrione, alto circa 18 metri e costruito in pietra grigia, e le mura difensive intorno al V-VI secolo. Successivamente la costruzione venne occupata dai Longobardi che lo trasformarono in una stazione commerciale.
Divenuto un monastero intorno all'VIII secolo, ospitò un gruppo di religiose benedettine, che aggiunsero all'edificio originale i locali che ospitavano le celle, il refettorio e la sala di preghiera, oltre a un portico a tre arcate e la piccola chiesa intitolata alla Vergine. Nel 1453 il monastero venne abbandonato e, in epoca più recente, fu riutilizzato come cascina rurale.
L'intera costruzione venne in tal modo riadattata alle mansioni agricole: il portico venne murato, l'entrata della chiesa ampliata e trasformata in magazzino per carri e attrezzi e tutti gli affreschi vennero coperti da un nuovo intonaco. Nel 1976 venne acquistato da Giulia Maria Mozzoni Crespi che lo donò al Fondo Ambiente Italiano, che ha provveduto a ristrutturarlo
