Götaplatsen powstał na potrzeby światowej wystawy Expo w 1923 roku, kiedy to Göteborg obchodził 300-lecie swojego istnienia i od tego czasu jest jednym z najbardziej znanych miejsc w mieście. Na placu znajduje się nie tylko słynny posąg Posejdona zaprojektowany przez Carla Millesa, ale także Muzeum Sztuki w Göthenburgu, Teatr Miejski i Sala Koncertowa.
