Sorge a fianco del duomo arcipretale dei Santi Pietro e Paolo.
Il campanile sovrasta la pianura friulana per la sua singolare altezza (in un centro abitato così piccolo): è il primo d'Italia e il trentaduesimo nel continente europeo.
La sua struttura è caratterizzata da un insieme di cellette chiare che mettono in evidenza l'interno marrone: in sommità si notano orologi quadrati con numerazione romana.
L'arciprete del duomo, Valentino Buiatti, fu il sostenitore principale della costruzione, in Mortegliano, della torre campanaria più elevata della penisola. Nel 1955 iniziarono i lavori con la direzione dell'architetto udinese Pietro Zanini (1895-1990), secondo un progetto di personale e moderna interpretazione dello stile neogotico.
Il 20 settembre 1959 ebbe luogo l'inaugurazione con grande partecipazione di popolo.
Il campanile ottagonale è realizzato in calcestruzzo armato e laterizi: alla base c'è una cappella e una loggia funge da cella campanaria.
Lo Zanini mise in atto una lodevole proporzionalità degli elementi decorativi per rendere artisticamente attraente la visione d'insieme fino all'ardita cuspide alta ventidue metri, sormontata dalla croce.
Negli anni successivi, purtroppo, la torre dovette subire una storia di lento degrado e di mancanza di mezzi finanziari per la manutenzione: radicali restauri sono stati, comunque, effettuati nel 1990.
