Il castello, appartenente alla famiglia Sanseverino, prende il suo nome dalla congiura organizzata al suo interno da parte dei baroni del regno, ai danni di Ferdinando I d'Aragona re di Napoli. La congiura avvenne il 1° ottobre del 1481 e si concluse con la sanguinosa strage dei baroni nella grande sala del primo piano; da quel momento il castello fu chiamato del "Malconsiglio".
Il castello ha la forma di un parallelogramma, fiancheggiato da sette torrioni, i più antichi dei quali quadrati, due bitorri e alcune torri circolari, poste ai vertici della costruzione. È costruito su due livelli, con un ballatoio che risale ad una ristrutturazione voluta dai Revertera nel 1600. La parte più bella del castello è la Sala della Stella o degli Spiriti, nelle cui nicchiette intagliate nei muri erano custoditi i tesori dei sui abitatori.
