At the top of the island of San Nicola, from whose rocky spur it dominates the magnificent sea of the Tremiti, the abbey of Santa Maria a Mare was built in 1045 by Benedictine monks and soon became a particularly popular sanctuary. Modified in the fifteenth century, it is one of the architectural jewels of central-southern Italy. Inside you can admire the magnificent mosaic floor of the nave and the fourteenth-century monumental wooden crucifix, object of great devotion.
