About Abbey of San Marco alle Paludi

Abbey of San Marco alle Paludi - San Marco | Secret World Trip Planner

The Abbey of San Marco alle Paludi, located just outside the town of Fermo, is an enchanting place nestled in the Marche countryside. Its history is rooted in the 11th century, when Augustinian friars, known as Militi da Sant'Agostino, settled in the area and reclaimed the surrounding environment, which was once in a precarious condition, hence the name "Paludi."Next to the abbey, at the request of the Magistracy of Fermo, a lazaret was also built, where the Augustinians cared for the needy and wounded returning from the Crusades. Evidence of this important function is still present on the outside of the church through a commemorative inscription.Although only a few fragments remain of the remains of the ancient abbey, the church has been preserved over time through significant restoration work in the last century.Despite its small size, the church is divided into three naves and its brick walls have small windows that give the structure a special light. Some parts of the floor are made of glass panels, which allow one to observe the foundations of the former sacred complex. The church is embellished with numerous frescoes and ex-voto paintings, donated by the faithful, which testify to the devotion and gratitude of the community. In addition, some very interesting sculptures can be admired, also featuring unusual subjects in Catholic symbology. Also worth mentioning is the beautiful outdoor garden, lovingly and quietly tended, which contributes to a serene and relaxing atmosphere.
