A dull rumble rises from the depths of the gorge even before the waterfalls become visible. Then comes the mist — cold, acrid, thick with sulfur — and finally the image that no photograph can truly capture: a curtain of rust-colored water cascading over rocks stained with orange, yellow, and ochre, as if someone had spilled a can of paint over an already alien landscape. The Cascadas del Agrio, near Caviahue, in the Argentine province of Neuquén, are fed by the Río Agrio, one of the most acidic rivers on the planet, with a pH that in some places drops below 2 — comparable to concentrated vinegar — due to its direct origin in the volcanic waters of the Volcán Copahue, an active volcano that dominates the horizon just a few kilometers away.
The result of this extreme chemistry is a landscape that seems to have come from another world: the rocks along the riverbanks are permanently tinted by mineral deposits — iron, sulfur, aluminum — that the acidic water dissolves and redeposits on its way down. The waterfalls split into two main drops, often referred to as Cascada Superior and Cascada Inferior, both accessible on foot along dirt paths that follow the canyon. The lower drop is the most scenic: the water plunges about twenty meters into an amber-colored pool, enveloped in a cloud of steam that on cold days blends with the volcanic fumes rising from the valley.
The sound and the force of acidic water
Approaching the lower waterfall means progressively entering a different sensory dimension. The sound of falling water drowns out every other noise — conversations, wind, birds — and the vibration can be felt underfoot on the rocky path. The mist produced by the impact of the water on the rocks is constant and reaches visitors already about twenty meters away from the base of the waterfall. It is advisable to wear a light raincoat not so much for the rain but for this continuous drizzle that the water generates as it falls.
What physically strikes, in addition to the visual power, is the smell: a sour and sulfurous note that is not as unpleasant as one might expect, but reminiscent of certain thermal environments. The water of the Río Agrio, while technically not touchable for long without protection due to its acidity, flows with a particular transparency — it is not murky, but has that amber and orange hue that comes from dissolved minerals, especially visible where the sun hits the surface directly.
The volcanic context: the Copahue in the background
The waterfalls cannot be understood without considering their geological context. The Copahue Volcano, located on the border between Argentina and Chile at about 2,965 meters above sea level, is a periodically active stratovolcano — it has had documented eruptions in 2012, 2016, and in subsequent years. It is precisely its hydrothermal activity that makes the Río Agrio so chemically aggressive: the crater waters, rich in sulfuric acid, flow into the river and determine its unique characteristics.
Caviahue, the small tourist center from which one departs to reach the waterfalls, is located at about 1,600 meters above sea level and has a few hundred resident inhabitants. The town is also known as a winter ski resort, but in summer it becomes the starting point for excursions to the volcano, the waterfalls, and the natural hot springs in the area. The atmosphere of the town is typical of Patagonian mountain villages: essential, quiet, with few but functional services.
How to get there and when to visit
The Cascadas del Agrio can be reached from Caviahue by traveling along an unpaved road of about 8 kilometers, accessible by regular vehicles during the dry season. Alternatively, many visitors choose to get there on foot or by bicycle, following the path along the river. The best time to visit is between November and March, when temperatures are mild and the trails are passable. In winter, the area is often covered in snow and some roads may be closed.
It is preferable to visit the waterfalls during the central hours of the morning, when the light is sufficient to appreciate the colors of the rocks without the backlight of the afternoon. There is no fixed entrance fee for access to the waterfalls, which are part of a public natural area, but it is a good practice to inquire at the Caviahue tourist office about the conditions of the trails, which can change after rain. Bringing your own water is essential: river water, of course, is not potable.
What to observe on site
Those who visit the waterfalls attentively will notice some details that make the place truly unusual. The rocks immediately around the base of the lower waterfall are covered with a multicolored patina — bright orange, sulfur yellow, iron gray — that changes hue depending on humidity and the angle of light. In some spots, small side pools collect the river water and display even more intense, almost fluorescent colors.
The vegetation around is sparse and adapted to the acidic environment: a few hardy shrubs, some tufts of grass on the banks farther from the river. This scarcity of greenery amplifies the sense of a primordial landscape. Those who bring a notebook or a camera will find in the details of the rocks — in the mineral veins, in the small side waterfalls, in the reflections of the amber water — inexhaustible visual material.
