About Akamas: The Wild Park at Cyprus' Edge

Akamas: The Wild Park at Cyprus' Edge - Neo Chorio | Secret World Trip Planner

No paved road crosses the heart of the Akamas Peninsula National Park. To truly reach it, one must leave the asphalt near Neo Chorio, a village inland from the Paphos district, and rely on dirt paths that rise among Mediterranean scrub and limestone rock. It is this absence of infrastructure, rare for an island in the eastern Mediterranean frequented every year by millions of tourists, that makes Akamas something genuinely different.

The peninsula extends for about 230 square kilometers in the northwestern corner of Cyprus, jutting out towards the open sea that separates the island from the Turkish and Syrian coasts. The park was formally established to protect one of the island's most intact coastal ecosystems, but its protection has long been contested between development interests and environmentalists. Today it represents one of the few stretches of Cypriot coast where the sea turtle — particularly the Caretta caretta — continues to lay eggs on the beaches of Lara and Toxeftra, monitored each summer season by researchers from the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research of Cyprus.

The beaches of Lara and the turtle nests

The beach of Lara can be reached by traveling along a dirt track that starts from the area of Agios Georgios, to the south of the peninsula. The gravel and coarse sand that make it up, combined with the absence of beach facilities, make it visually very different from the equipped beaches of Ayia Napa or Limassol. Between May and August, female Caretta caretta come ashore at night to lay their eggs, and some areas are marked off with stakes and nets to protect the nests. Visitors who arrive during the day can observe these fenced areas and, at certain times, meet volunteers or technicians engaged in monitoring.

It is important to know that accessing the beach at night during the nesting season is prohibited, and the park authorities enforce this rule. Those who want to see the turtles responsibly can inquire at the visitor center in Paphos or contact local organizations that organize authorized guided night outings in limited numbers.

The Path of Aphrodite among Orchids and Scrub

The most well-known hiking trail in the area is the Path of Aphrodite, a loop of about 7.5 kilometers that starts from the site of Baths of Aphrodite, a small natural cave with a freshwater pool surrounded by wild figs, to the north of the peninsula. The trail ascends through forests of carobs, mastic trees, and Phoenician junipers, crossing areas where in spring — between March and April — endemic orchids of Cyprus bloom, including the Ophrys kotschyi, a species that grows almost exclusively on the island.

The elevation gain is not extreme, but the terrain is uneven and in summer the heat can be intense. The best time to walk the trail is in the early morning, between March and May, when the temperatures are mild and the vegetation is at its most colorful. Bringing at least one and a half liters of water per person is essential, as there are no supply points along the route.

The hidden Byzantine chapels in the ravines

Akamas: The Wild Park at Cyprus' Edge - Neo Chorio | Secret World Trip Planner

In the inland of the peninsula, along less-traveled paths, there are small chapels built in the medieval period, some dating back to the time of Byzantine rule over the island, prior to the Venetian conquest of 1489. The chapel of Agios Minas, hidden in a ravine among the vegetation, is one of the most evocative examples: the external walls made of local limestone show traces of faded frescoes, and the interior is still occasionally used for religious functions by the faithful from nearby villages.

These buildings are neither museum-fied nor fenced: they stand as they have survived, with rough wooden doors and votive icons left by pilgrims. It is a type of heritage that in other parts of the Mediterranean would have been transformed into a tourist attraction; here it simply remains part of the landscape.

How to organize the visit from Neo Chorio

The village of Neo Chorio is the most convenient access point within the peninsula. There is no official entrance with a ticket office: the park is open access, but some sensitive areas — such as nesting beaches — have seasonal restrictions. To explore the interior without an off-road vehicle, it is necessary to proceed on foot or by mountain bike. Many visitors rent a quad or a jeep in Paphos, about 40 kilometers to the south, but it is advisable to check that the vehicle is suitable for dirt paths and that the driver is aware of the restrictions imposed within the park. Avoid the months of July and August for hiking: the heat often exceeds 35 degrees and the risk of heatstroke is real. September and October offer better conditions with fewer visitors.
