About Alcantara Gorge

Alcantara Gorge - Castiglione di Sicilia | Secret World Trip Planner

In times before the Greek colonization, the eruption of the Moio crater, located on the northern slope of Etna, had produced an enormous lava flow that reached the sea and formed Cape Schisò; over time the river crept into this flow, digging a deep and picturesque incision and releasing, toward the end of its course, two high basalt walls: the Alcàntara gorge. It can be reached on foot or by elevator, and the riverbed can be traversed, equipped with rubber boots that are rented on site, for a distance of 150 m. The gorge is one of the most fascinating areas of the Alcàntara River Park.
