Uchisar, the "Turkish Matera" carved in the rock, is a characteristic tufa citadel located in Cappadocia, in central Turkey. One of the most evocative places is certainly the fortress of Uchisar Kalesi, 5 km from Goreme. Kalesi in the local language means castle. This imposing castle seems to dominate with its mass the small village below. It is a volcanic rock in tuff, used for centuries as a refuge by the inhabitants of the valley to escape military attacks. Inside the castle have been discovered several churches carved into the rock. The reason could be the proximity to Goreme, a city rich in religious monuments. Getting to the top allows you to admire a wonderful panorama with the giant Mount Erciyes rising in the distance. The view is even more spectacular at sunset, when the sky lights up with warm hues.
